BOUNDARIES

To participate in EAST, you must have a space within tour boundaries: East of I‑35, West of 183, South of 183, North of Riverside Dr. If your studio or exhibition space is outside the boundaries, you are welcome to join by showing as a guest at another artist’s studio, temporary space, or gallery. If you are seeking a space, you may fill out the Guest | Host Form.

Spaces within 1/2 mile of the boundary line may also apply to be a part of the tour (excluding the I‑35 boundary).

FELLOWSHIPS

Big Medium awards artists Fellowships based on artistic merit and financial limitations. EAST applicants may apply for a Fellowship to receive partial or full financial support to cover the participation fee. Full, half, and quarter Fellowships are available. The fellowship application requires a $10 processing fee.

Fellowship applicants are asked to:
– Briefly describe their dedication to their artistic practice
– Describe their financial limitation
– Describe how they hope to benefit from their participation on the tour

Changes in 2019

Big Medium has always been committed to providing a platform for all artists through the East Austin Studio Tour. In an effort to be even more inclusive, we will be putting less emphasis on venue, so that we can highlight art as it happens anywhere. We hope this shift can allow the tour to represent more of the art scene in Austin. EAST may now include exhibitions at coffee shops, restaurants, boutiques, and more. Studios are still at the core of what we do and will receive a special designation in the catalog. While the criteria for space is more broad, please keep in mind that the EAST Committee will be looking for applications that show a strong commitment to a fine arts practice and quality presentation.

In 2019, we are also combining the Happenings category and Calendar of Events to form a comprehensive printed and digital event guide! The deadline to be included in the guide will be extended into October to allow more time to finalize these experiences. Artists are encouraged to submit demonstrations, performances, artist talks, opening receptions, and more to augment what they are already presenting as a part of EAST—these listings will be free. Stand alone events may also apply to the event guide for a discounted fee.

In addition, we have new categories to highlight valuable Community Partners and Business Partners in the east Austin community.

These changes are intended to serve our artists and better promote our partners. Our goal is to adapt to change in our city and continue to provide a powerful platform for creatives.

Read below for more info on each category to find where you should apply. If you have questions, please email east@bigmedium.org.

FAQ

Who can apply as an EAST participant?
Visual artists, artist collectives, arts organizations and galleries are encouraged to join in the annual celebration of visual art.

What benefits do I receive for participating in EAST?
EAST offers a behind-the-scenes glimpse at Austin’s best and brightest creative minds at work through an approachable, self-guided tour. Join us for EAST 2019 and be at the heart of one of the city's largest celebrations of visual art. With over 50,000 attendees each year, EAST is the opportunity for you to connect with new audiences in an innovative way.

In addition to having the opportunity to share your work with arts enthusiasts, industry leaders, and collectors, you will receive the following perks during EAST:

– Listing in the EAST catalog and map, with a combined 10,000 copies distributed citywide
– Listing on the EAST website (east.bigmedium.org) and app, including contact information and images of your work
– Access to EAST promotional materials for distribution to your networks, including EAST design assets, social media content, customized press release templates, and promotional flyers
– Opportunity to participate in the EAST group exhibition
– Discounts on advertising in the catalog
– Access to artist resource list with recommended vendors
– Considered for year-round visits with Big Medium’s donors and collectors
– Social media and web promotion of the tour
– Emails about artist opportunities, calls for submissions, and career development workshops through Creative Standard

If I share a space with another participant, what is the fee?
Each participant is encouraged to register individually, unless you are a collaborative. There are no discounts for group registrations. The benefit of registering individually is that you will receive better promotion for yourself and from Big Medium—the public will have access to your work, artist statement, and contact information, so you will be open to more opportunities throughout the year.

Can I set up in another registered participant’s studio, but not register?
We do not recommend this setup. It is in your best interest to register and officially be included on the tour. This way you can participate in the EAST Group Exhibition and be included in EAST promotional materials.

Do I still have to pay the $175 if I don't get accepted into the show?
We fully refund applicants that are not accepted onto the tour.

What does my participation fee go to?
Your $175 contributes to the services and platform the tour provides as well as production of promotional materials—including the catalog and map, flyers, over the street banners, etc—and marketing efforts, including digital and print ads in various media outlets. Big Medium is a nonprofit and our efforts and dollars go towards serving artists.

The registration fee is a lot of money for me right now, but I really want to participate. What should I do?
We strongly encourage artists who find the fee prohibitive to apply for a Fellowship. Big Medium awards artists scholarships based on artistic merit and financial limitations. EAST applicants may apply for a Fellowship within the tour application to receive partial or full financial support to cover the fee. EAST’s registration fee is comparable to other nationally acclaimed open studio tours and we are committed to keeping the cost as low as possible for our artist participants.

I want to participate, but I don't have a studio within the boundaries.
We want you to participate and Big Medium MAY be able to pair you with a space. Please fill out our Guest | Host Form. Please note, Big Medium cannot guarantee placement and will only seek a pairing, we highly encourage you to simultaneously seek space on your own.

Do guest artists have to live/work outside of the boundaries?
Not necessarily. Sometimes artists choose not to show at their own space even if they are within the boundaries, because they prefer to share space as a guest. Guests can also be from outside Austin.

How do I format my images for print?
Images should be at least 1500 pixels in 300dpi. If you do not have Photoshop, free alternatives include: Pixlr, Splashup, GIMP.
